The Maiden’s Tower, located in the Uskudar district in the Bosphorus of Istanbul, Turkey, is steeped in mystery and lore. The history of the tower stretches back centuries, and is a popular tourist attraction, visited by thousands of people each year.
The earliest known reference to the tower was made by the 3rd century Roman historian Athenaios, who wrote that a small structure was located at the entrance of the horn of the Bosphorus. Since then, the structure has been the subject of myths and legends describing its origin from the Ottoman Empire to the present. Many stories have been told about the Maiden's Tower, each with its own unique interpretation of the Tower’s history.
Many versions of folktales tell of a stormy sea preventing fishermen from reaching the Tower. According to yet another version, an Ottoman Sultan’s daughter was proclaimed to be unfortunate, and so the Sultan had the Maiden's Tower constructed to protect her from harm.
Another legend tells of a rich landlord who constructed the tower on orders of Alexander the Great. Alexander was said to have been impressed with the beauty of the tower, and its location overlooking the Golden Horn.
Today, visitors can go on boat tours to view the structure from the Bosphorus. The turquoise waters of the Bosphorus provide a breathtaking backdrop to the ancient structure. During the summer months, many cafés where serve all types of cuisine can also be found closeby.
If you’re in Istanbul, a visit to the Maiden’s Tower is a must. The stories offer the mystery, while the views provide a spectacular experience that you will never forget.
